DEC seeks feedback on 2020 Great Lakes fishing regulations

The DEC is seeking feedback from angler fishermen — someone who uses a hook and line — on proposed changes to the fishing regulations in New York's Great Lakes.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is looking for feedback on proposed fishing regulation changes for New York's Great Lakes.

The DEC is seeking feedback from angler fishermen — a fisherman who uses a hook and line — on proposed changes to the fishing regulations in New York's Great Lakes. These proposed changes are meant to protect and expand certain fish populations within the Great Lake areas of New York.

Throughout the past few years, the DEC has worked with fishermen to determine their preference for the management of sportfishing in Lake Ontario.

Some potential changes include decreasing the daily creel limit for rainbow trout, steelhead and brown trout on Lake Ontario. This change also involves increasing the minimum size limit for rainbow trout or steelhead in streams feeding into Lake Ontario.

Another proposed change would be extending the open season for lake trout on Lake Ontario and the Lower Niagara River.

"I encourage Great Lakes anglers to share their comments on these proposed regulations, which are intended to make New York's world-class Great Lakes fishing even better," said Basil Seggos, the commissioner for the DEC.

These proposed changes could be formally adopted in 2020 after the DEC reviews the comments this winter.

Comments will be accepted until December 14. To view the proposed changes, and provide input visit the DEC's website.
