BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Buffalo Sabres have acquired defenseman Nathan Beaulieu in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a third-round draft pick (68th overall in 2017), the team announced Saturday.

Beaulieu, a 24-year-old former first-round pick, set career-highs in goals (four) and assists (24) in an up-and-down 2016-17 season.

Beaulieu started the season as Shea Weber's partner but ended the season as a healthy scratch in the Canadiens' season-ending loss to the Rangers in the first-round of the NHL playoffs. Beaulieu's days with the Canadiens appeared to be numbered after the team signed KHL defenseman Jakub Jerabek back in May.
