When Your Family Tree Becomes a NCAA Bracket

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The sign outside Egerton Law in Greensboro might turn a few heads. It shows support for all North Carolina teams

During March Madness? That's essentially unheard of. But Lawrence Egerton has a few good reasons to show some love to all the teams. He says they like to show community support with their sign.

"We try to talk about something other than the fact that we're lawyers," he explains.

But if you take this year's bracket and rearrange it a little bit, it may as well be Egerton's family tree.

"I went to school in Carolina," he explains. "I'm a lawyer so I went to undergraduate school and law school there."

But his father and one of his brothers went to NC State. He had another brother go to Davidson College. And his mother went to what's now UNCG, before it transitioned from an all girls school.

"They didn't have any basketball team at that time, in fact they also didn't have any boys at that time."

Egerton's son and daughter both went to UNC for undergrad, but later both went to Duke.

"No matter who wins we'll have a winner in the family," Egerton explains. "Of course, we'll also have a loser in the family."

Egerton, of course, is a Tar Heels fan. He says one of his fondest memories was the 1956-57 season when the team went undefeated.

"Just like it is now. People went wild about basketball."

But even if Egerton roots for the Tar Heels, he has roots connecting him to so many other teams.

"You'd expect me to be rooting for Carolina, and I do," he explains. "But I can tolerate these other teams winning too, you know?"

Egerton says they regularly change up their billboard outside of the office in downtown Greensboro.
