Oscars 2018: Here's why stars are wearing orange American flag pins

Stars are wearing the accessory in support of gun violence prevention after the Parkland school shooting.

Awards show red carpets have become a place for celebrities to express their support for timely initiatives. At Sunday's Oscar Awards, we're seeing a new addition: Orange American flag pins.

Stars will don the accessory from the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety in support of gun violence prevention after the Parkland school shooting.

"Tonight, actors and allies will #WearOrange pins and ribbons on the #Oscars red carpet to bring awareness to gun violence prevention in the wake of the Parkland school shooting," the organization confirmed via Twitter Sunday.

The shooting, which occurred on Feb. 14, killed 17 students and staff and injured 14 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

This isn't the first time celebrities have donned a statement-making accessory on the red carpet.

Stars wore Time's Up pins to the Golden Globes in January to support the sexual harassment prevention initiative of the same name. At the 2017 Oscars, stars supported the American Civil Liberties Union by donning blue ribbons.
