BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A voter registration drive with free food and a community atmosphere was held at Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Buffalo Saturday afternoon.

The Western New York Chapter of the Women's Bar Association of New York (WBASNY WNY) hosted the event. The deadline for New Yorkers to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election is Friday, Oct. 14.

The nonpartisan event at Martin Luther King Jr. Park was free. Attendees registered to vote while enjoying music by DJ Shane Depree and munching on free food.

Vanessa Glushefski, a WBASNY WNY Local Director and event organizer, said she hopes the event allowed attendees to see voting not only as a civic duty, but also as a "tool of empowerment."

"Our aim is to increase voter registration among residents in the Fillmore Avenue area while also inspiring a sense of community," she said.

The WBASNY WNY is also hosting a panel and town hall style event to discuss the election season on Thursday from 5 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County conference room. For more information, click here.
