BUFFALO, NY — The Buffalo & Erie County Naval & Military Park celebrated the anniversary of the end of World War II on Sunday.

The victory, commonly known as “VJ Day,” honors the United States' victory over Japan.

The celebration included a tribute to the famous “Kissing Sailor,” which is a famous photo of Quartermaster First Class George Mendonsa kissing a passing nurse. Mendonsa was the helmsman of the USS The Sullivans, which is now part of the Buffalo Naval Park.
