NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- New York State Park Police say they recovered a body from the Niagara Gorge just before 2 p.m. Tuesday.

State Park Police say they received a call from a hiker, who reported seeing a body floating in the rapids of Lower Niagara River, near the Whirlpool in Niagara Falls.

The Park Police Swift Water Rescue Team found the body in the rapids, and the body was removed from the gorge by the Erie County Sheriff’s Helicopter.

The Niagara County Medical Examiner's officer will be conducting an autopsy to determine how the person died. The identity of the victim has not been released.
