A New York State Trooper has died after he was hit by a vehicle near the police barracks.

Maj. William Keeler says the accident occurred around 6 a.m. Wednesday on Ballard Road in the Saratoga County town of Wilton, 35 miles north of Albany.

Trooper Timothy Pratt had pulled his patrol vehicle over at the entrance to the station to check out a tractor-trailer parked in the median. Keeler says the 30-year veteran was struck by a vehicle when he stepped out of his cruiser.

Officials say he was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Trooper Pratt had been with the NYSP since 1987. He also service in the United States Air Force. He is survived by a fiancee and three children.
