NFTA changes plans for metro expansion

Instead of a long underground extension under Bailey Avenue, the new proposal would send it under Kenmore Avenue, and bring it above ground a short way away on Niagara Falls Boulevard.

BUFFALO, NY - The Niagara Frontier Transit Authority (NFTA) is cooking up new plans for a metro rail expansion.

2 On Your Side heard about a new plan Tuesday to extend the metro rail north. Instead of a long underground extension under Bailey Avenue, the new proposal would send it under Kenmore Avenue, and bring it above ground a short way away on Niagara Falls Boulevard.

It would stretch all the way up to UB North Campus.

The NFTA says that shorter tunnel could save the project $200 million from the old proposal. And now, they're looking for residents' input.

Helen Tederous with the NFTA says, "We're really very much influenced by the community: what everyone thinks about this, their concerns. If this is something that the community does not want, it's not something we'll pursue.

There will be a public meeting December 6 at Sweet Home Middle School on Maple Road - but any work on the project is a long way off. It likely would not begin for another six years at the earliest, and would take another five years to build.
