SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse police remain at the scene where authorities say a uniformed officer shot and killed a man who fired at him during a traffic stop near Syracuse University.

Police say the man got out of his vehicle late Sunday night and fired several shots at the officer, who returned fire, hitting the man at least once.

Authorities say officers at the scene began first aid treatment until an ambulance arrived.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he died a short time later. Police have not released his name, pending notification of his family.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Police Monday morning remain at the scene of the shooting, located four blocks north of the university campus.

Officials say no additional information will be released until a news conference at noon Monday.

The investigation is ongoing.
