ALBANY -- A two-acre indoor waterpark inside a luxury hotel is set to open in the Catskills in early 2019.

The owners of the Poconos' Camelback Resort said Tuesday they plan to open the Kartrite Hotel & Indoor Waterpark at the new Resorts World Catskills, which is set to open next month.

The Thompson, Sullivan County, complex was long planned as part of the $1 billion casino and resort that received a state gambling license in 2014.

“We’re building upon the family-focused thrills and amenities that have made Camelback Resort & Aquatopia a premier destination in the Pocono Mountains,” Arthur Berry III, a co-owner of the new waterpark.

“The Kartrite’s location at the Resorts World Catskills property provides a unique opportunity for us to deliver a whole new adventure for guests as part of a true global destination.”

The exact opening date was not revealed, but the waterpark and hotel with 324 "exquisitely designed guest suites" will be a welcomed addition to the Catskills, which is looking to recapture the tourism boom it experienced in the so-called Borscht Belt in the mid-to-late 20th century.

Aquatic Development Group, the Albany-area based company, will design and build the waterpark -- saying it will be modeled after the "architecture of indoor waterparks in Europe."

That will include a column-free waterpark with a "barrel-shaped transparent Texlon roof that will bathe visitors in natural sunlight throughout the year."

The park will include tropical plants, a mezzanine and cabanas.

The Kartrite will feature restaurants, a spa, a ropes course and an arcade, according to the owners.

The facility expects to have 600 permanent jobs and up to 250 construction jobs. The company didn't say how much the project will cost.

The Kartrite’s name comes from the explorer character, Kartrite Van Der Berris.

"Built in the midst of 1,600 acres of wilderness in the Catskill Mountains, this re-imagined Catskills hotel embraces the beauty and historic nature of the region while becoming the new standard for both architecture and fun-packed adventure at every turn," the news release said.
