New lofts open on Elk Street

Buffalo leaders celebrated the opening of new lofts in the city's Valley Neighborhood.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo leaders celebrated some new development tonight in the city's Valley neighborhood Thursday.

The McDermott Lofts on Elk Street officially opened Thursday, which turned the empty former St. Clare's Catholic school into 11 new apartments and commercial space.

The development was made possible in large part because of historic tax credits.

Sam Savarino, President & CEO of Savarino Companies said, "It's the only way you can do this. Most of these projects are challenges. The neighborhoods you're going into are challenges, you're usually a pioneer and you're the first one in and you have to hope that the change comes after you, which I'm happy to say in this neighborhood it has."

The first tenant of the building is a new office for the the Western New York Land Conservancy.
