NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- Lakeview Animal Sanctuary decided to throw a country-style celebration Sunday to raise money for multiple local animal shelters.

The "Hoedown" is being held from noon until 6 p.m. at the Gratwick Fire Hall in North Tonawanda.

The family-friendly event includes a scavenger hunt, face painting, petting zoo, vendors and basket raffle.

Jacqueline Scalise, a volunteer for Lakeview Animal Shelter, said the event started out as a fundraiser for Lakeview Animal Sanctuary involving a basket raffle.

"Lakeview is trying to raise money for its vet bills...and it's just a never-ending process in the animal world," she said.

However, it didn't take long for other animal shelters, including the Buffalo Animal Shelter, to ask if they could take part in the fundraiser, Scalise said. The Lakeview Animal Shelter gladly agreed.

On Sunday, there were around 200 baskets being raffled off at the event, Scalise said, and multiple vendors.

"Everybody came together, " she said.

The Lakeview Animal Sanctuary in Pendleton is a non-profit, no-kill home for abused, abandoned and unwanted animals.
