BATAVIA, N.Y. -- A mother charged after her twin infant sons died in a fire gave revealing statements about the incident that came to light during her recent trial.

The statements of the mother, Heather Ace, and others connected to the night of the fire were released Wednesday. They refer to what was said to deputies back in May when Ace was arrested.

Ace told deputies she locked her twin two-year-old sons in their room alone while she went to buy marijuana and go shopping Friday, May 20.

She also told police she was gone about an hour and 15 minutes when she got a call from her mother. Her mother told her over the phone that her multi-family home on State Street Road in Batavia was on fire.

Ace's father also admitted to lying to deputies about where his daughter was. He said it was an attempt to protect Ace.

Ace has been charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She pleaded not guilty on Monday. Her case resumes Nov. 21 at 10:30 a.m.
