Man dies following Amherst fire

Fire crews responded to a fire at an apartment complex in the Town of Amherst Tuesday.

AMHERST, NY - Fire crews responded to a fire at an apartment complex in the Town of Amherst Tuesday.

The call came in during the 11 A.M. hour to a multi-unit complex on Millersport Highway near Eggert Rd.

Kyle Gentry, Fire Chief of Eggertsville Fire Department, " We were put out for a structure fire to a two unit apartment building. First units on scene encountered heavy fire conditions throughout the second floor of the one apartment. [...] We did find one victim inside who was pulled out and taken to ECMC.

The victim of the fire, Mr. Mahfoz M. Shaban Jr, 46, died of his injuries suffered in the fire.

The Chief also noted that the fire began to spread to the neighboring apartment on the second floor near the roof. Crews had the scene under control around 12:30 p.m.

Damage to the complex was set at $250,000. Although the fire started in one apartment, the entire four-unit complex suffered extensive fire and water damage.
