Local unions gather for Working People's Day of Action

Dozens of local union members gathered in Niagara Square on Saturday for the Working People's Day of Action.

BUFFALO, NY — Dozens of local union members gathered in Niagara Square on Saturday for the Working People's Day of Action.

Representatives of unions representing teachers, social workers and various other fields, including government agencies, turned out to show solidarity.

"We're here today to talk about fulfilling the American dream and making sure that all people can be lifted for that...whether it's students in a classroom, living wages, equality for all...things that made this country great and we wanna make sure that we protect," said Joe Cantafio, NYSUT board member.

While standing on the Federal Courthouse steps, they focused on a key test case to be argued before the US Supreme Court on Monday.

In that case, a government worker in Illinois is challenging a state law that he must pay so-called agency fees to a union for collective bargaining while he refuses to join that union.
