BUFFALO, N.Y. — A group of people are calling for the City of Buffalo to rename Columbus Park and remove the statue of Christopher Columbus.

The group held a rally at the corner of Porter Avenue and Niagara Street, the site of the Christopher Columbus statue.

Native American advocates have pressed states to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day over concerns that Columbus helped launched centuries of genocide against indigenous populations in the Americas.

In years past, vandals have thrown red paint on the Columbus statue. This year, Buffalo Police had a car stationed nearby to prevent vandals from doing it again.
