ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - Congressional colleagues of the late New York Democrat Louise Slaughter are praising her as a patriot and champion of women and her western New York district.

Speaking at her funeral Friday, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said two planeloads of congressional members and staff made the trip to Rochester to honor the 88-year-old Democrat, who served in the U.S. House for 31 years.

Slaughter died March 16 after falling at her home.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recalled at the service at the Eastman Theatre how Slaughter had taken her under her wing when she was elected to the Senate, something Clinton said Slaughter did for many women in Washington.

Georgia Congressman John Lewis, who met Slaughter when the two were freshmen in Congress, called her generous and strong.
