THERESA, NY — A Ft. Drum soldier is accused of killing NYS Trooper Joel Davis and Nichole V. Walters, according to New York State Police.

Justin D. Walters, 32, is charged with 1st-degree Murder and 2nd-degree Murder

Police say at about 8:09 p.m. Sunday night, Trooper Davis responded to a report of shots fired during a domestic dispute on County Route 46 in the Town of Theresa, in Jefferson County.

While Trooper Davis was approaching the home, he was shot once and killed. Walters' 27-year-old wife was also found dead at the scene.

Walters surrendered to other State Troopers without incident. Walters is an active duty Army infantryman who is currently stationed at Fort Drum.

Officials at Fort Drum say that Staff Sgt. Walters, of Zeeland, Michigan, has served at the post since joining the Army in 2007. Walters was deployed to Afghanistan for two years — one-year tours with the 10th Mountain Division's 1st Brigade in January 2009 and again in March 2011.

Walters will be arraigned in Town of Leray Court at 5 p.m Monday.
