BUFFALO, N.Y. - Instacart, an online grocery delivery service, will launch in parts of Western New York starting August 1. There's a lot of excitement about the new way of shopping, but also a lot of questions about how it works.
Two On Your Side talked with Instacart operations manager Kyle Carnes to get answers to some FAQ.
How do I sign up?
You sign up online. Enter your credit card information and start choosing which items you want to buy.
How much will delivery cost?
Delivery fees start at $5.99. One-hour delivery is $9.99
How fast will I get my groceries?
There's one-hour delivery. The company says two-hour delivery is their most popular, but you can schedule other delivery times. You can schedule a delivery up to a week in advance. You can also GPS track your order.
What stores can I order from in WNY?
The company is partnering with Wegmans, Petco, CVS, and PriceRite to start. Other stores may be added in the future.
Are there things I can't order?
No alcohol, prescription drugs, or live pet deliveries (no, really).
What about perishable items?
You can order produce, dairy, and other perishable items — even ice cream! The Instacart shopper will use cooler bags to transport your delivery.
How do I know if the service will deliver to my house?
You can search your zip code on the Instacart website. The initial WNY delivery area will cover more than 425,000 households.
What happens if my area doesn't show up?
Delivery isn't available in all areas of Western New York, but the company plans to expand to more communities. The company uses signup information and calculates drive times to help determine how they build the market. It is also in nearly 90 cities across the country and plans to expand to 180 in the next six months.
Do I have to tip?
Tipping your delivery driver isn't required, but appreciated for good service. You can rate your experience and add a tip after delivery.
What if my order is wrong or I am missing something?
Instacart provided this response to the question:
"We want to get orders right for our customers every time! However, when something does go wrong, our Customer Happiness team works tirelessly to make it right. Customers are asked to rate each completed order and can report any problems there or by calling or emailing our Happiness team. A team member will work 1:1 with the customer to find the best solution, whether that be issuing a refund or arranging for re-delivery."
Who is delivering?
Instacart works with independent contractors — think ride sharing for groceries. The company will provide a name and picture of your delivery driver so you know who to expect at your door.
How do I become an Instacart driver?
You can apply on Instacart's website. The company is hiring more than 150 drivers for the Buffalo area.
Are there any promotions to celebrate Instacart coming to WNY?
Use the promo code hibuffalo20 to get $20 off your first order and free delivery. It expires 9/20/17. The company is also offering a free year trial of Instacart Express which is unlimited same-day delivery on orders over $35. That offer expires 8/15/17.
