DOT begins two-year work to Skyway

BUFFALO, NY - The Department of Transportation is getting started on work to the Skyway that's going to take two years to finish.

The state D.O.T. started work Monday to repair the bridges - something congressman Brian Higgins says will last until June 2020, closing down lanes for hours most days.

Higgins is concerned that the D.O.T. hasn't done enough to deal with the traffic problems that will come from that.

He wants to see synchronized traffic lights on other routes like Seneca and South Park, to give commuters another realistic choice.

"The technology exists to do this in a very cost-effective way. For example, you cold do all of South Park Avenue, synchronizing that lighting, for about $200,000, for a $30 million reconstruction project. This is an alternative that should be taken seriously," Higgins said.

The phase of the skyway work that started today will close a lane on the inbound skyway from nine to five every day for the next four months, and potentially overnight as well.
