LEWISTON, NY - An unintentional release of dog repellent is to blame for several Lewiston postal workers falling ill Wednesday.

The call came in at shortly before 8 A.M. at the 8th St. facility. Many mail carriers are issued the repellent in the event of a dog attack along their route.

Fire officials say seven people complained of watery eyes and sore throats. They were released from the hospital a few hours later after officials determined the irritant was non-toxic.

The post office reopened for business on Thursday.
