Buffalo's milder winter means a less severe impact on roads

A Public Works official with the City of Buffalo says it's because the roads haven't frozen and thawed out as much as it has during past winters.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — It seems as though Erie County has a little less work to do this winter.

While county workers were out looking for some potholes to fill Monday morning they told a 2 On Your Side photographer they were having trouble finding some to fill. However, they did eventually find some on Wehrle Drive in Cheektowaga.

No one from the county was available for an interview on Monday. But, City of Buffalo Public Works Commissioner Mike Finn says he noticed the weather hasn't been as harsh on the roads as it has in the past.

"February and March can still be tough, but as far as what we've seen so far and the freeze thaw cycles, they've not been as severe as we've seen in other, past, and even recent winters," Finn said.

He says the city works year round to fill potholes.

"And we've been continuing to maintain that effort and address potholes as they come up," Finn said.

Finn says the city is also staying ahead of winter this year, as it always does, by maintaining its plows and stocking up on salt. He added that just because Buffalonians have been luckier this winter, it doesn't mean we should all get too excited just yet.

"Winter is not over yet so we're still just going to keep ourselves ready to address whatever winter can throw at us," Finn said.

Finn says if anyone wants a pothole repaired to contact the city's call service center at 311 (851-4890 outside the city) or file a complaint on the city's website.

New York State Department of Transportation also says they have crews out cold patching right now. That's in addition to regular maintenance, including fixing guardrails.

Officials with the NYSDOT also say the winter is the best time for crews to make repairs to road signs.
