NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- State Park Police say a hiker discovered a body floating in the rapids of the Lower Niagara River Friday, just above the Whirlpool in Niagara Falls.

The hiker called New York State Park Police at about 11:07 a.m.

The Park Police Swift Water Rescue Team and Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to the gorge and found the body. After a rescue operation that lasted around six hours, a Niagara Falls Fire Department truck helped lift the body from the gorge.

The body was then taken to the Medical Examiner's Office. The person's identity and the cause of death are still under investigation.
