Aetna to pay $17 million for leaking members' HIV status

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Tuesday that the company revealed the sensitive information of nearly 2,500 New Yorkers back in July.

BUFFALO, NY - Health care company Aetna must pay over $17 million in settlements after leaking the HIV status of thousands of their members.

$1 million of that $17 million is owed to New York alone.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Tuesday that the company revealed the sensitive information of nearly 2,500 New Yorkers back in July, after sending out envelopes with an over-sized-- transparent address window, which showed text confirming the members' HIV status.

Ironically, that mailing was intended to notify members of a class action lawsuit which, as a part of its resolution, members could purchase HIV medications at brick and mortar pharmacies instead of mail order-delivery.
