BUFFALO, NY-- A Buffalo man will spend the next nine years in prison for possessing fentanyl.

Eddie Fields, 45, admitted to criminal possession of a controlled substance. Investigators say detectives found a large amount of fentanyl during a raid at Field's Williamstown Court apartment.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid and is often used with heroin. The combination of the two has lead to deadly consequences for addicts.

“This defendant is where he belongs - locked up and no longer a danger to the community,” says Erie County District Attorney John Flynn in a statement. “We will continue to take a hard line against drug dealers who peddle this poison and are contributing to the opiate epidemic.”

Following his prison sentence, Fields was also sentenced to a five-year post release supervision.
