Elmwood Crossing partners drop plans for supermarket and hotel

Gone are the 40,000-square-foot supermarket on West Utica Street and a 75-room boutique hotel.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The development team behind the $150 million Elmwood Crossing has dropped two key elements from the project and added more housing instead.

Gone are the 40,000-square-foot supermarket on West Utica Street – Elmwood Crossing’s northern border – and a 75-room boutique hotel on three floors of the Variety Tower on Bryant Street, the southern border.

“Covid made it almost impossible to get (bank) financing for the hotel, and there was very limited interest in the supermarket,” said William Paladino, the Ellicott Development Co. president and CEO.
