Math Correspondent Kate Welshofer Breaks Down the History of Pi Day

Daybreak proves there's nothing like Pi for breakfast as the gang brings viewers team coverage of Pi Day. It included everything from the deals being served up by restaurants and tech companies to the history of the whole celebration from noted Math Correspondent and remedial math student Kate Welshofer.

Let's start at the beginning.

Pi, the number represented by the Greek symbol represents a constant.

It is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter which is approximately 3.14, which is why Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th or 3/14.

Get it?

Okay.

That figure is directly proportional to how much I don't really know what i'm talking about

because no one would ever accuse me of being great at math and I definitely had to look that up.

Pi and I do have a lot in common, though, as we are both irrational and can go on forever.

As for Pi Day, it exists thanks to a guy who absolutely looks like he would make up a holiday!

It is the late and greatly bearded Larry Shaw. He was a San Francisco physicist who just wanted to have a little fun. He is credited with coming up with the idea to celebrate Pi with parades, pastry and pizza in the late 1980s.

Pure genius.

Pi Day also coincides with Albert Einsteins birthday.

And one more note, it has come to my attention that a lot of people are tired of

there being a made-up holiday everyday and for those people I want you to know that tomorrow is, and this is true you can look it up, "Everything You Think Is Wrong Day."

And that's a slice of Pi Day history for you. Please enjoy!
