Conway, SC (Sports Network) - Joab Jerome's layup with two seconds left in
overtime propelled Winthrop to a 60-58 victory over Radford on Tuesday in the
opener of the Big South Tournament at HTC Center.
Jerome, who finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds, netted the game-tying
layup with 1:09 left in the extra frame, and after R.J. Price missed a 3-
pointer at the other end, Jerome finished a layup with two ticks left to lift
the Eagles to victory.
Reggie King added 11 points and six boards for the Eagles (14-16), who advance
to take on South Division champion Charleston Southern in Thursday's
quarterfinal round.
Rashun Davis paced the Highlanders (13-19) with 18 points and five rebounds,
while Javonte Green added 13 points and five boards for Radford, which lost
five of its final six games to close out the season.
Winthrop led by four, 50-46, with 3:14 left, but Davis closed regulation on a
personal 6-2 spurt, as his jumper with 38 seconds left tied the game and
forced an extra session.
Radford ripped off five straight free throws to take the early lead in
overtime before Winthrop closed the contest on an 8-1 spurt, including
Jerome's back-to-back layups, to escape with the victory.
