Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Mets have signed outfielder
Marlon Byrd to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training,
the team announced on Friday.
Byrd, 35, split time between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox last season,
appearing in a total of 47 games. He combined for a .210 batting average with
one home run and nine RBI.
In 2010, his first season with the Cubs, Byrd was named an NL All-Star,
hitting .293 with 12 homers and 66 RBI in a career-high 580 at-bats.
Over the course of his 11-year career, Byrd has also been a member of the
Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Nationals and Texas Rangers, appearing in
1,103 games with a .278 average, 82 home runs and 445 RBI.
