Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners officially agreed to
terms with starting pitcher Joe Saunders on Tuesday, signing the veteran lefty
to a one-year contract.
The deal also includes a mutual option for the 2014 season. Financial terms
were not disclosed.
The 31-year-old made 28 starts between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the
Baltimore Orioles in 2012, finishing with a 9-13 record and 4.07 earned run
average.
He also made two postseason starts for Baltimore this past season, going 1-0
with a 1.59 ERA over 11 1/3 innings pitched.
Over eight major league seasons with the Angels (2005-10), Diamondbacks
(2010-12) and Orioles, Saunders owns a 78-65 career record with a 4.15 ERA.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Mariners designated first
baseman/designated hitter Mike Carp for assignment.
