(bisons.com)- Jeurys Familia spun a gem in what will presumably be his last start with the Bisons this season.
The young righty turned in one of his better outings of the season,
striking out nine in seven innings of a 10-3 victory over the Red Wings
on Thursday from Frontier Field. Home runs from Fred Lewis and Josh
Satin helped the cause as the Herd snapped a three-game losing streak.
Familia hasn't missed a turn in the rotation all season and his 28
starts will either lead or share in the lead for the most in the
International League this season. In fact, only one other Bisons pitcher
in the last 17 seasons has started 28 games in a single year (Dillon
Gee, 2010).
Start number #28 was one of his strongest all year. While the nine
strikeouts matched a season-high, it was his one walk that spoke louder
of his strong performance. The only free pass came in his seventh and
final inning as Familia was in a string of eight of 10 batters retired.
Familia threw 63 of his 104 pitches for strikes.
Rochester tallied up with solo runs in the third, fourth and fifth
innings, but so did the Bisons and the team never trailed after Lewis'
monster two-run shout opened the scoring in the second inning. Buffalo
then blew the game open with a five-run ninth inning that was
highlighted by Satin's three-run shot into the Bisons bullpen in left.
Satin's home run was his 14th of the season and gave him 59RBI. He is just two behind Valentino Pascucci for the club lead.
BISONS NOTES: Fred Lewis extended his hit streak to
nine games on Thursday night, a personal season best...C.J. Nitkowski
and Drew Carpenter pitched a perfect eighth and ninth innings
respectively...The Bisons record for starts in a season is 29, set by
Dave Johnson (1988) and matched by Dorn Taylor (1990) and Tim Wakefield
(1994).
