MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) - Officials say three inmates have been killed in a northern Mexico prison a few miles from the penitentiary where 44 gang members were massacred this week.
Nuevo Leon state public security spokesman Jorge Domene Zambrano says the victims had just been booked into the Topo Chico prison on suspicion of kidnapping. He did offer details on how they died Tuesday. At the time the inmates were captured in early Feburary, he said they were members of the Gulf Cartel members, like the 44 prisoners killed Sunday in nearby Apodaca.
That massacre may have been the deadliest prison killing in at least a quarter century in Mexico. The prison's director and 18 guards are being held on suspicion of allowing imprisoned Zeta gang members escape.
