Giants release Bradshaw, Canty

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Just one day after parting ways with linebacker Michael Boley, the New York Giants released running back Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive tackle Chris Canty on Wednesday.

The Giants are obviously trying to create more cap space. Bradshaw, who had two years left on his contract, was set to make $3.75 million in 2013 and $4 million in 2014. Canty was due to make $6.5 million in 2013.

Bradshaw will move on following a six-year stint with the Giants. He rushed for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns as the team's primary running back in 2012. However, he has been plagued by chronic foot issues, leading to another procedure this offseason to insert a larger screw in his twice-fractured right foot.

In 84 career games with the Giants, Bradshaw rushed for 4,232 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also caught 132 passes for 1,087 yards and three scores.

The presence of David Wilson and Andre Brown on the roster made Bradshaw expendable.

"Pound for pound, Bradshaw is one of the toughest football players that I've been around," Giants general manager Jerry Reese said. "Ahmad played football like Giants football should be played."

Canty was one of the Giants' high-prized free agents back in 2009. In four years with the Giants, Canty recorded 124 tackles and nine sacks.

The 30-year-old Canty was limited to just nine games this past season after having knee surgery in the offseason.

The Giants are coming off a 9-7 season that ended with no playoffs for the 2011 Super Bowl champs.

"Chris Canty is a pro's pro, a true team player and competitor," Reese said. "He helped us get to the top in 2011 and it was a pleasure having him here during his time with the New York Giants."
