The state, and the taxpayers who fund it, spent $192.7 million last year for the compensation of so-called double dippers - employees who receive both pensions and salaries from the state.

The growth amounts to a 47 percent increase in such costs from 2010, records show. Many of the recipients justify the doubling up, and some don't consider themselves double-dippers at all, but the practice has numerous critics.
